Organic Chemistry 1 – Chem 301
Required Materials: Bruice Organic Chemistry; 5th ed.
Optional Materials: (1) Bruice, Study Guide and Solutions Manual, (2) ACS final exam study guide (available from Chem Club); (3) molecular model set (available from Chem Club – you may use your own models on exams EXCEPT the final exam – I do not provide model sets); (4) a scientific calculator may be needed ocassionally but, unless otherwise announced, calculators are not required and not allowed on exams including the final exam.
Organic chemistry cannot be learned passively, i.e. by watching and listening – you must work problems! Each chapter includes skill-building problems within most of the sections – you should work all of these as you read the chapter. I will assign specific end-of-chapter problems selected to test your understanding of key concepts. If you have a study guide, you should use it to check your understanding and as a source of hints when
you have trouble solving a problem, but you should re-work every problem for which you use study guide hints. Although homework will not be collected, homework problems may be used either directly from the text or with some modifications as the basis for exam questions.
