Iron Requirements increase during pregnancy from 18 mg per day to around 27 mg per day2. Good dietary sources of iron (more than 2 mg/serve) include fortified cereals, legumes, lentils, cashews and baked beans9. Consuming fruits and/or vegetables with iron foods helps absorption. Folate Is needed for healthy growth and development. T o reduce the likelihood of neural tube defects in the baby, it is recommended that women consume an additional 400 µg/day folic acid through a supplement or in the form of fortified foods for at least one month before and three months after conception in addition to consuming food folate from a varied diet…… Alcohol There is no known safe level of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Alcohol crosses the placenta and can lead to physical, growth and mental problems in some babies. If you choose to drink you should have less than seven standard drinks a week, not more than two standard drinks on any day and two alcohol free days per week5. Multivitamin supplements It is best to obtain nutrients from a healthy diet. If you choose to take a supplement in pregnancy, choose one that is specifically for pregnancy. Other vitamin and mineral supplements may have higher doses of some nutrients than recommended for pregnancy. Most supplements have poor calcium content so you will need to aim for 2 serves of dairy per day to meet increased requirements2. Alternative remedies Many herbal preparations have a drug-like effect. These should be used with the same caution as with other drugs. Weight Gain6 On average you should expect to gain 11.5-16kg. If you are a teenager or underweight you need to gain up to 18kg. If you are overweight it is recommended you gain less than 11kg. If you are having trouble controlling your weight ask to see a dietitian. Breastfeeding and keeping to these guidelines will help you return to your pre pregnancy weight.
