The seminar focuses on the history of modern architecture and architectural theories, from the Industrial Revolution to the present. Through in-depth examination of weekly case studies, students will be studying a number of influential designs in modern times as well as literatures and ideas that have been particularly important to debates and discussions in the field. Case studies include historical and contemporary buildings, as well as museum’s architectural installations, plans and ideas of urban design, and unrealized architectural projects. The course encourages students to actively participate in the learning process. Each week, a student will conduct a short in-class presentation examining reading assignments of the week. In addition to weekly seminars, there may be evening lectures and trips to nearby architectural exhibitions and building sites during the semester. Active participation is highly encouraged. All reports and presentations must emphasize critical thinking and thoughtful analysis. The class is given without prerequisites. The success of the class depends on students’ faithful commitment to scholarly improvement and academic excellence. COURSE RULES AND REGULATIONS This course encourages active learning process. Hence, active participation is required, so are civility and respectful behaviors. 1.
