Art 288 Modern Architecture Describing and analyzing architecture Architecture is the most complex of the arts. It takes careful analysis to understand just how a building, a townscape, a total built environment or constructed landscape works. Architectural imagery consists of a combination of structure, design, materials, meaning, and use. Here are some guidelines to writing and thinking about architecture. Exterior •Approach (arbitrary or contrived, obscure or open, monumental or informal) •Contrast or relationship to surrounding area in terms of scale, design, style •Non-physical elements that affect one’s perceptions of the architecture: familiarity, power, ceremonial use, social or historical role, function •Symmetrical or asymmetrical, horizontal or vertical •Scale and proportion (relative to humans, monumental or intimate, compatible or harmonious) •Texture and materials (durable like stone, ephemeral like canvas; slick like titanium, rough like granite) •Pattern and rhythm (how do placement of doors, windows, balconies, etc. work) •Color (monochrome, polychrome) •Evidence of alteration, denaturation, additions, modifications Interior–•If you can get inside, consider space, smell, sound 20th Century Winston-Salem Architecture Visit and analyze at least 5 of these buildings.
